Boating Classes

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary courses provide instruction to boaters at all levels, from the fundamental to the advanced. Our courses are taught by experienced and knowledgeable instructors committed to the highest standards of the U.S. Coast Guard.  What’s more, our classes may qualify you, upon successful completion, to receive your state mandated Boater’s Education Card.  Click here to see a listing of upcoming classes.
Boating Skills and Seamanship, Safe Boating Class for Boaters Education
The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater.  The course, now in its 13th edition published in 2008, consists of 13 two- to four-hour lessons providing up-to-date knowledge for handling boats in all conditions.
The course also includes state specific boating laws. “Boating Skills and Seamanship” (BS&S) adds to the “About Boating Safely” (ABS) course the subjects of Aids to Navigation, weather, how to chart a course and night time operations.  If you have a larger cruiser, will be operating at night on on larger bodies of water this is the course for you.

About Boating Safely, Boater's Education Class
This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states.

About Boating Safety includes a wide variety of information.
You’ll learn:
  • General information about boats and maintenance
  • Information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings
  • Navigation rules and aids to navigation
  • Guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely.
  • What to do in case of boating emergencies
  • State-specific laws and regulations you must follow
If you are a day sailor and only operate close to home and in good weather this may be the course for you.

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s “Advanced Coastal Navigation” course is a comprehensive course to prepare the boater with the knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat.
The course lessons include:

  • Radio navigation
  • Voyage planning

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Sailing Skills and Seamanship course (SS&S) is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice sailboat operators.
The course, now in its 6th edition published in 2008, is divided into parts:
10 core requirement two-to four-hour lessons
6 elective lessons that will enhance the skills required for a safe voyage in all conditions.
